The South Project is thrilled to have two new artists-in-residence in Melbourne between May and July. During his residency (June, July), South African artist Clifford Charles is based at Monash University, while Chilean artist Claudia del Fierro is based at RMIT until mid July.
Clifford Charles is a renowned South Africa artist, writer and community activist. Charles received a fine arts degree from the University of Witwatersrand in 1983 and has since developed a prolific career exhibiting in South Africa and internationally. In 2005 Charles held a solo exhibition for (Iniva) London -as part of the BBC Africa ' 05 and in 2003 was an invited participant of the Venice Biennale Faultlines exhibition curated by Gilane Tawadros. Charles has developed a multifaceted practice that includes politically motivated community work, publishing and curating, all of which tend to inform his beautifully subtle paper works.
Clifford will be based at Monash from the 2 June to the 30 July 2007.
Claudia del Fierro is a multimedia artist based in Santiago, Chile. Her recent work has shown a distinct relational element, which she hopes to further develop during her project in Melbourne by engaging with a new audience. Del Fierro has recently held a solo exhibition at Galeria Metropolitana and was selected for the Havana Biennial 2006 in Cuba.
Artist Statement: For a number of years I have been working with audiovisual documentation of actions or interventions in public spaces, where some of the main concerns have been issues of community interaction and gender. I often use self-representation or mimetic performance to point out, or to observe a specific environment. I have borrowed anthropological strategies to approach and observe as an insider, in order to re-construct characters and scenes for installations. Humour is often an important aspect of representation and re-construction of characters and scenes.
Claudia del Fierro will be working towards an exhibition at Project Space Gallery to be opened on the 2 July 2007.
